Jute is an extremely flexible material which can be used to make a wide variety of products. It has been traditionally been made into ropes, sacking, and hessian cloth, as well as cushion covers, curtains, and carpets. The coarse ends of the jute plant can be made into inexpensive cloth, while the finer jute fibres can be spun into a silk-like fabric.
Newer ecological uses of jute include: paper (an eco-friendly answer to forest destruction), containers for planting saplings which can be planted directly into the soil, and ground stabilization for the prevention of erosion while vegetation develops.
